8 Family-Friendly Beaches

For families making Hvar their temporary home, these eight beaches offer distinct experiences that balance discovery with the practical needs of traveling with children. Whether you're seeking a quick morning swim or planning a full day's adventure, here's what to expect at each location.

Family Beach Tips for Hvar:

  • Most beaches are pebble or rock, so water shoes are highly recommended

  • Morning hours typically offer calmer waters for young swimmers

  • Watch out for the sea urchins, they are not poisonous, but they hurt if you step on them

  • Many beaches have limited shade, so bring umbrellas or seek out spots near pine trees

  • Beach facilities vary widely – plan accordingly with snacks and water

  • The "pomalo" (take it easy) philosophy applies to beach days too – don't rush!

1 - Plaza Mina, Jelsa

A rare sandy beach in Jelsa, Plaza Mina is perfect for families with young children. The shallow entry and soft sand make it ideal for little ones to play safely while parents relax. The beach is conveniently located near town amenities, offering easy access to refreshments and facilities.

2 - Uvala Paklina, Stari Grad

This sheltered bay features a pebble beach with exceptionally clear water. Paklina is less crowded than some more famous spots, making it perfect for families seeking a quieter experience. The surrounding pine trees provide natural shade during hot summer days – a blessing when spending all day by the water with children.

3- Grebišće, Jelsa

Grebišće offers a beautiful blend of pebbles and sand in a picturesque cove near Jelsa. The beach slopes gently into the sea, creating a safe swimming environment for children of all ages. With nearby parking and a small beach bar, it combines convenience with natural beauty.

4 - Zenčišće Beach, Jelsa

A local favorite, Zenčišće is somewhat more rugged but rewards visitors with stunning natural surroundings. The beach offers interesting rock formations that older children love to explore, has a concrete pier ideal for jumping in the sea, while the crystal waters are perfect for snorkeling. Consider bringing water shoes as the entry can be rocky in spots. There is a beach bar open during the high season (July, August) for refreshments.

5 - Soline, Vrboska

Nestled in the "Little Venice" of Hvar, Soline beach in Vrboska offers shallow, warm waters in a protected bay. The beach is lined with pine trees providing natural shade, and the surrounding area offers charming walks through the picturesque village when the family needs a break from swimming. Also, there is an Aquapark near the beach, and it is possible to rent a kayak, surfboard, etc. Easiest way to reach Soline is taking a bike ride along the sea promenade from Jelsa.

6 - Zečevo Island

Adventure awaits with a short taxi boat ride from either Jelsa or Vrboska to this uninhabited island. Zečevo offers an exciting day trip experience with pristine beaches and a feeling of discovering your own private paradise. Pack plenty of water and snacks as there are no facilities on this natural gem.

7 - Brizenica Bay, Stari Grad

This crescent-shaped pebble beach near Stari Grad offers crystal clear waters in a less developed setting. Surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation, Brizenica provides a true escape into nature. The beach is somewhat harder to reach but rewards visitors with tranquility and authenticity.

8 - Kupalište Bonj, Stari Grad

A unique beach experience with elegant stone platforms and a distinctive 1930s ambiance. Bonj offers both natural beauty and cultural interest, with its architectural elements making it unlike any other beach on the island. The nearby pine forest provides welcome shade for afternoon relaxation.
