Key Projects
for 2026-27
Wooden
Boats
Carbon Neutral Nautical Tourism
Context: Croatia is a paradise for sailors, but traditional craft have given way to engine-powered yachts, speedboats, and catamarans in recent decades. These boats use an enormous quantity of fuel and harm marine life. They are also made of materials that do not biodegrade and are difficult to recycle.
Local Problem: There is no international sailing school on island Hvar. There are no guided paddling excursions. There is no community infrastructure for maintaining wooden boats.
Solution: Over time, The Field School of Hvar aims to fill these gaps, reviving:
A school where children and adults can learn to sail or sharpen their skills.
A workshop where individuals can build and maintain wooden boats, using shared tools and hosting skill-building workshops.
A tourism program that offers ecology and history tours of the island on kayaks, canoes, and other small boats.
2026-27 Goal: These are big projects. For the upcoming academic year, our community will take meaningful steps towards those projects by achieving the following:
Learners and parents will build at most two sailing prams and a wooden kayak, and will repair two canoes.
Learners ages ten and older will take weekly sailing lessons during the fall.
Learners ages thirteen and older with an aptitude for sailing will be invited to join the summer team as Junior Guides, co-leading trips and assisting camp guides.
Plan
Summer, Explorers
Learners ages five through fourteen will help create a real, full-size wooden boat over the course of the summer. Field will also offer boatmaking workshops and open hours to local children and adults.
Academic Year, Flotilla
During the academic year, children will learn how to sail and paddle around the island, while studying navigation, marine biology, ancient history, and classical literature of the sea.
They will also work to build an additional wooden boat. Field will continue to support the local traditional boatmaking community by offering tutorials and open workshop hours.
Related Roles
Faculty
In the summer, our “Explorers” Guide will lead successive groups of learners and host weekly workshops related to nautical history and science, as well as boatmaking.
In the fall, our Elementary and Secondary level Language teachers will lead students in an exploration of Homer’s Odyssey, imagining the events of that legendary sea journey in and around the island of Hvar.
Fellows
During the academic year, a Boatmaking Fellow will lead learners and parents to create a wooden boat, as an elective, supporting the exploration of ancient maritime history in learners’ humanities and language studies.
