Community

A Village for Families

In addition to our program for children, The Field School of Hvar hosts a robust program for parents and other adult family members. This is included in the cost of tuition, and is a joyful, central part of the Field experience.

Community begins with our "campus" at the Fontana Resort, which functions as a family coliving village. Our learning center, coworking office, and private accommodations are all clustered in a safe setting that lends itself to spontaneous interactions and lots of independence for kids.

A typical summer day starts with an unhurried morning and might continue with a visit to the beach, a big Mediterranean lunch, and a short nap before the program for children begins.

After pickup in the evening, families head down to the town of Jelsa, which is buzzing with children until 10 or 11 on summer evenings. Local kids are selling trinkets on the riva (waterfront promenade), eating gelato and playing in the fountain in the piazza while parents sit nearby on apertivo, or play on the trampoline and playground in the deep, lush public park.

Connecting Parents

The demands of career and care can leave very little time for adults to refill their own social cup. Field prioritizes time for fellowship and connection between adults, as well as kids.

  • Before the program begins, we host online pre-departure sessions to get families acquainted.

  • Upon arrival on Hvar, there is an opening orientation on Sunday night to further break the ice.

  • On the first Monday of each session, while kids are taking flight at The Field School, adults are invited to a farm-to-table welcome dinner or lunch on a UNESCO-protected landscape.

  • Throughout each session, Field hosts workshop and activities for adults, such as hikes, ethnobotany workshops, crafting, or poetry reading.

  • Adults are invited to host their own sessions with Field School support in logistics. In the past, parents have hosted meditation, yoga, pasta making - even a skillshare on day trading!

  • Field also organizes casual family outings to local events like concerts, outdoor movies, festivals, usually led by a parent volunteer.

A Step Further

For the first time in 2026, The Field School will be offering travel experiences and local products: Field Trips and a Field Store!

Field Trips are fun-filled excursions into the island that align with Field’s ethos of stewardship and curiosity. Think: star-gazing with an astronomer, kayaking with a marine biologist, hiking with a naturalist, or exploring ancient ruins with a historian.

The Field Store delivers baskets of local produce and other goodies to the Fontana where families can easily pick them up. For example, a brunch basket with coffee, eggs, olive oil, sheeps-milk cheese, fresh chard, tomatoes, bread, quince jam, orange juice, and prosciutto. Or an analog bag with a meditation candle, journal, activity book, polaroid camera, and locally activated flip phone.

More details about both offerings will be made available to enrolled families in 2026.
