Schedule

  • Depart from Coworking at 1030

  • 1100, arrive at Velo Grablje

  • Hike

  • 1600, depart Milna

  • 1630, back at Fontana

Note: this is a fairly gentle downhill hike, but it is about 10km and some parts of the path will be a bit rough or overgrown. It is essential to wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes and to bring water and food.

A Hike through History

This hike begins in Velo Grablje, once a capital of lavender production in Europe. It is surrounded by the sprawling stone “mesh” of swales, dug out to cup lavender plants in precious water and soil.

The hike descends along a medieval cart path through a canyon to the abandoned agricultural town of Malo Grablje, where we will stop for lunch and exploration. The trail then continues through olive orchards, ending in the seafront village of Milna.

Bike Ride: Soline

Schedule

  • 1030, Pick up bikes from reception or center Jelsa (depending on bike shop’s availability)

  • 1100, Bike to Soline

  • Possible stop in Vrboska (fishing museum, Vinarija Carić, lunch)

  • Beach exploration at Soline

  • 1300, Return bikes

  • 1330, Back at Fontana

Vrboska and Soline

Vrboska, dubbed ‘little Venice’ by affectionate locals, is a medieval sailing village with a unique and historic fortress church (you can go up to the roof) and a small fishing museum, as well as a handful of good restaurants and wineries.

Soline is the name of the peninsula beyond Vrboska coming from Fontana. There is a pebble beach on the side facing Jelsa and a beautiful, somewhat wilder shale beach on the side facing the island of Zečevo.

The entire path from Fontana to Soline is flat and paved, but the shoulder is unprotected and you will probably encounter a few cars, so it is important to pay attention to your surroundings.

Bike Ride: Stari Grad Loop

Bike Ride: Stari Grad Loop

Let's take a longer ride together! We'll start by picking up bikes from T-Club in Jelsa, leaving together from there. Please bring €10 per bike for the rental. Only cash will be accepted.

A description of the 20km/12.5mi loop is below. Everyone is welcome to ride at their own pace, with two official re-group stops along the way (one for lunch and one for coffee). Expected time on the bike will vary with speed but should not exceed 2 hours for the slowest riders. To ensure everyone gets a real break rather than a rolling stop, we can be leisurely at official rests.

Route

  • Head north from Jelsa along the coast to Vrboska.

  • Go east toward the center of the island, passing through the fields of the Stari Grad Plain.

  • Lunch in Stari Grad (place TBD, probably Kod Damira).

  • Continue south through the villages of Dol and Vrbanj.

  • Coffee in Vrbanj.

  • Continue through vineyards and olive groves east toward Jelsa.

Safety

  • Most of the route is on less frequented, paved car roads. The stretch between the Hvar Airfield and Stari Grad is macadam. While cyclists are common on this route, we will be sharing the road with vehicles. Please wear bright colors for visibility and plan to stay alert to surroundings.

  • Bring plenty of water to stay hydrated.

Map of route with elevation profile (but please note we'll begin the loop in Jelsa rather than Vrboska):

Founder Fair

Parents from The Field School community are invited to talk about their entrepreneurial and creative projects with our learners.

  • Any parent can participate if he or she has a project to share. Children in Lower Elementary, Upper Elementary, and Middle will be the audience.

  • The format will be a bit like "speed dating.” Parents do not need to do any special preparation, but if you have something to share that would help children understand what you do (it can be on your computer), you are welcome to bring it. Children will have some pre-determined questions and will also ask you their own questions as they arise. Each interview will last about 10 minutes.

  • This event will take place in the outdoor tables at the Fontana Cafe.

As part of our “Homes” unit on human and natural ecosystems, children will be designing and executing simple impact or social entrepreneurship projects. This fair is an opportunity for them to research real entrepreneurial projects, the needs they meet in the world, and the thought process that goes into shaping a successful venture.

  • 1100, arrive at Humac

  • Guided walk to cave (45 minutes)

  • 1300, depart Humac

  • 1330, back at Fontana

Cyclops’ Cave

A unique example of well-preserved rural architecture, the former shepherd's settlement of Humac, founded in the 17th century, is located 7km from Jelsa, at 350 m above sea level, from where a magnificent panoramic view of the surrounding villages, bays, the island of Brač and the Makarska coast opens. The charm of this settlement lies in its harmonious stone houses, courtyards, balconies, narrow streets and nature that has merged with the village in an inspiring scene. The Church of St. John and Paul in Humac is a recent construction.

From Humac, you will visit Grapčeva špilja, the most important prehistoric site on the Adriatic, in which signs of culture from the 4th millennium BC have been found.

How to get there

This hike will be guided by Jakov Rubinčić, whose family has lived in Humac for generations.

One of the oldest cities in Europe

Sitting between a fertile valley and a deep, protected bay, Stari Grad (literally ‘old city’) has been home to human settlement since at least the 4th Century BCE, when it was formally incorporated as the city Pharos by Greeks from the island city-state of Paros.

A few suggested spots:

  • Za Pod Zub for gourmet groceries

  • Stari Grad Museum for local history

  • Lunch: Kod Barbe Luke for fish; Alfonso’s for neapolitan pizza; Il Giardino for southern Italian (Barese); Kojo for sandwiches and cakes

The best way to experience Stari Grad is just to wander through the back streets and get a little lost in its millennia of charm!

Sveti Nikola, highest point on Hvar

Sveti Nikola is the highest peak on the island of Hvar, located at 626 m above sea level and named for the chapel which is located there. To the north of the peak is the farming village of Svirče. To the south is the wine harvesting and trading outpost of Sveta Nedjelja.

It is no accident that this place was dedicated to Saint Nicholas, the protector of sailors - as well as children and repentant thieves! The summit offers views over the Adriatic in all directions. On a clear day, one can see as far as Italy. It would have been a natural lookout for the many centuries of explorers, traders, pirates, soldiers, and refugees who have populated the island from time immemorial. The chapel has weathered many storms, been damaged by lightning over the years, and rebuilt each time by devoted hands. According to local legend, St. Nicholas himself once showed his displeasure when his statue was moved to protect it from damage, sending hail upon the village of Sveta Nedjelja until his statue was returned to its rightful place.

Sveti Nikola also offers a glimpse into a critical chapter from Hvar’s heritage - the 15th Century peasant revolt. Matija Ivanić, the famed leader of the Hvar Rebellion, is credited with the chapel’s construction. Ivanić led an uprising of bourgeoisie and working people against a self-titled nobility on the island, precipitating unrest against feudalism and Venetian colonial rule across all of Dalmatia. The conflict points to the influence of Renaissance humanism in Croatia, and presaged not only the political upheaval of the Englightenment, but also a pattern of conflict between classes and against outside rule which echo down through Croatia’s history into the present.

Our route

There are multiple paths to Sveti Nikola. The two more moderate, uphill paths are from Dol and Svirće on the northern face of the island’s ridgeline. The steeper and more adventurous path is from the southern hamlet of Sveta Nedjelja. This itinerary chooses the first option, coming from Svirće, since we’ve already hiked part of the Dol route with the Purkin Kuk hike.

This is essentially a one-way hike. Vehicles cannot come all the way to the summit, so after a break for lunch, we will walk down to the pick-up location. Time allocations above are generous to allow for an easy pace and frequent stops.

What to bring

  • Plenty of water. There is nowhere to refill after we start.

  • Anything you need for outdoor bathroom breaks.

  • Lunch or energy-dense snacks.

  • Sturdy shoes. High socks or pants are a good idea, because we will be walking through some areas with high grass or brush.

  • Anything that improves your hikes, such as polls, a sunhat, binoculars, etc. Carolyn will bring specimen jars and a lightweight pair of binoculars.

Service Projects

Parents are invited to deepen their experience on Hvar by taking on service projects. This is completely voluntary. Sign-ups will take place during the Parent Pow-Wow on Monday, September 8th (or virtually for families who need to arrive on Hvar later). If you do take on a service project, expect to commit about 4 hours per week to it. The volunteer host will provide transportation and training.

Field Work

Olive harvest, clearing brush, and other fall agricultural activities with a local farmer. Expect moderate physical activity, including bending, lifting, and tool use, as well as the risk of bee stings. Gardening or farming experience is a plus.
